Starting fresh: New Year resolutions.

Updated: Jan 5, 2021

I think we can all agree that 2020 was a trying year for us all for one reason or another. A new year brings hope for change + new beginnings. Despite 2020's craziness from politics to a pandemic, I had a lot of positives happen in my life personally.

I went to Bali which was an amazing + life changing trip. I moved in with my boyfriend + have been working on creating a home for us both to really love. I opened my own salon + sanctuary that I love sharing with all my clients + friends. I built a travel van, my pride + joy Jimmy that I can't wait to adventure in in this new year! But, I like so many have things to improve on this year. For myself + to create the life I truly love + continue to nurture. So here's to 2021, washing 2020's misery away. A time to start fresh.

I feel like I have always gone into the new year with "resolutions". Things like,. I want to lose that last 5-10lbs I couldn't get rid of last year or gained throughout the holiday season. I want to contribute a lot of money towards my travel fund for the upcoming year, etc. This year my resolutions look a little bit different.

Reset

I'm doing a reset with a lot of friends + strangers online to hold myself accountable going forward in the new year. Clean eating, a gallon of water a day, physical activity every day, a daily act of kindness.

It's been a nice way to engage with a community of others holding each other + themselves accountable. It's not a challenge to lose the most weight, or a strict diet plan to count macros. It's less about deprivation + more about accountability to ones self. And, I think that we could all use a lesson in that going into a new year. Rely upon yourself. Don't let yourself down!

Organization

Another big one for me this year was decluttering. It began with my closet + has sort of spiraled out into the rest of the house. I have been fascinated with people who are minimalists. Like SO fascinated. I love tiny houses. I love clean lines. I love less clutter but, for some reason even after my MANY closet clean outs + a move across the country I still find myself with so much STUFF. I have always heard of this Capsule Closet idea + have always wanted to try it but, have struggled "letting go" of my clothing. Not necessarily because it has help any sentimental value per say, but maybe because I think maybe one day I'll wear it again, even though I can't remember that last time that I did. Or, maybe it's because I've spent countless dollars on some of the items. So, there they sit. Taking up valuable space.

Alas, what finally worked for me was doing it by seasons. So I took everything out of my closet. And, I mean EVERYTHING. I put everything that was off season in bins to deal with it another day. All I was left with was Fall/Winter attire. As I was going through everything I got REALLY honest with myself. If I hadn't worn in within the last year I put it in the donation box. If those jeans didn't fit me because they were too big on me, even if they cost me more than I care to admit they went in the box. When I was done going through every single item of clothing + was left with only the things I couldn't part with I put them all back in my closet hanging up. Now that all my spring + summer attire wasn't taking up useful space I could hang up the tank tops + long sleeves that were shoved in drawers that I had forgotten all about. Blacks together, whites together, neutrals + then rainbow color order. (Which I recently learned while binging on The Home Edit) Next I went to TJ Maxx + found more cost effective bins (though I desperately would love The Home Edit version from the Container Store + for them to come +organize my entire house.) It was just the holidays + I'm ballin' on a budget friends. When I was at TJ's they had all sorts of clear bins + organizer drawers. I was obsessed +may have gone a little overboard. But, I figure they'll all eventually find homes in this disorganized chaos eventually.

My organizing kick has rubbed off on my boyfriend + he has also been tidying up + renovating his spaces in the house. It feels good to live with less, or at least for everything to have a home + for it to be easily accessible. Next up is my desk at the salon. But, I'm hoping to continue this tidy streak throughout the new year. I'll have to refer back to resolution #1 about that self accountability.

Kindness

I'd like to think that I'm already a pretty nice person. But, I want to be more mindful in general. From thoughts that I have about myself, to things that I say to others. Basically I want to re-read the Four Agreements + just be the best version of myself, for myself + for my loved ones.
